A very interesting and detailed report into the problems that the Digital Preservation world are facing on the Tesella web site. The only remaining question is - what is the solution? We believe that by writing your digital files to microfilm just once you then avoid all the on-going migrations and the costs and losses associated with those migrations over the next 500 years.

An interesting article from Philip Johnston in The Daily Telegraph about the recent digital storage disasters and loss of electronic information. His conclusion is interesting - "The belief that if records are held electronically they are somehow more likely to last is almost certainly mistaken.

The BBC looks into how our headlong rush to go digital means that much of our past is becoming just a meaningless code of 0s and 1s. A substantial amount of material stored on computers, magnetic tape and even CDs is no longer accessible due to rapid deterioration and obsolescence.
- 2004 - Dutch Metamorfoze organisation issues its "preservation microfilming" standards and guidelines
Metamorfoze started in 1997 and the programme is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and co-ordinated by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the National Library of the Netherlands. - Training in Preservation Microfilm
The National Library of Australia, in collaboration with the State Library of South Australia and under the auspices of IFLA PAC, has produced a set of preservation microfilming training material consisting of 10 modules, 6 wall charts, a logbook, a learning guide, a glossary/index and a small kit of practical training aids. It is available from late July 2003. The training material, Training in Preservation Microfilming, written by Heather Brown, Preservation Manager at the State Library of South Australia, is the result of a IFLA PAC survey on microfilming training needs in the South East Asia and Pacific region conducted in 2001

Basic guide to Microfilming
Brand new standard produced by Standards Australia in 2002. This goes into enough detail to help you get started with your own microfilm camera with some good basic info on document types, lighting, processing etc including a good section entitled "Frequently Encountered Defects". The best part of this standard is on resolution targets and how to set them up to suit your camera.
This standard is not exhaustive but at Australian dollars $18.72 (approx UK £7.00) for the PDF version it is a worthwhile addition to your standards collection.
