The Genus Group is very proud to announce the launch of a brand new division totally dedicated to the supply of document management hardware, supplies, service and software for large format documents. This includes the scanning, plotting, printing and archiving of engineering drawings, plans and maps. The new division, imaginatively named Large Format Systems Division (LFSD), will be headed up by Phil Jones , formerly of Imation and DSS. Phil has 15 years experience in the large format sector with major sales to power stations, construction companies, government departments, local authorities, manufacturing organisations, MOD, engineering companies and architects.
The new division will market large format products from Ricoh, KIP, HP, Rigoli, Kodak and Wicks and Wilson . To see the full range please take a look at www.genusit.com/lfsd
“This new division fills a gap in our portfolio offering..” commented Paul Negus , MD, Genus Group “.. and continues our aggressive expansion plans of being the Hardware, Consumable and System supplier of choice for the Document Management industry.”
Over the last year Genus has taken a number of steps to improve its recycling policy. As a result the amount of material that was discarded has now been reduced by over 75%. This has been achieved by the recycling of all of our cardboard, paper and plastic materials used in manufacturing and distribution.
Paul Negus, MD – Genus Group, commented “We are constantly looking for new ways to minimise our environmental impact. I am very pleased with the new plastic and card recycling initiative. Along with our nationwide developer and fixer collection service I feel that we are making efforts, as much as possible, to avoid waste.”
Last August Genus hosted its inaugural Golf Day which proved to be very successful and popular. After publicising the Golf Day in our last Newsletter we had a number of requests to be invited to the 2005 event. Those requests have been noted plus we will be inviting back the host of rogues that attended the 2004 event! As a pre-notification to everybody, please be aware that our 2005 event will be on Wednesday 10th August. Once again it will be at the superb Hinckley Golf Club in Leicestershire.
If you would like to come along to our 2005 Golf Day then either please contact your sales representative or call Barry Middleton on 024 7625 4955.
Jacket Production – Continuous Stationery
Genus – The Microfilm Shop is the only UK manufacturer of microfilm jackets in the UK . As such we can manufacture, stock and supply jackets very efficiently to the UK and European market. We have just enhanced our production capabilities by buying a jacket mounting machine – this allows us to supply our jackets on folded continuous stationery.
A number of our clients require jackets supplied in this way as it allows the jackets to be passed through a far greater range of printers to print the header information. By purchasing this equipment it should allow us to cope with the current higher volume of continuous stationery jackets and to supply the jackets on a number of different stationery formats.
Kodak have just enhanced the popular 2400DSV and 3000DSV microfilm scanners to the new 2400DSV-E and 3000DSV-E. The 2400 and 3000DSV’s have been, and still are, our best selling microfilm scanner units. With the new enhancements at NO extra cost the appeal of these scanners will be better than ever. Enhancements include:-
-
Enhanced 600 dpi CIS Array for even higher quality scanning of images. The new Contact Image Sensor is an improved version of the CCD array.
-
Date and Time printing on the page – when the optional High Speed Video Laser Printer is used.
-
Image Distortion correction – this feature is used on images that are viewed as rounded images due to filming primarily on 35mm images at high resolution. This feature “squares” the distorted image to make it clearer to read.
-
Optional Engineering Zoom Lens for the 3000DSV-E. This 7 – 7.5x zoom lens is ideal for full frame 35mm scanning/printing. This lens is designed for specific situations where the 35mm images are wider than is usual and out of normal specifications.
-
Optional second universal paper cassette option for the high speed video printer. This will enable an additional 250 sheets of paper to be held.
-
Coming soon – Q2 2005 – optional USB2 interface in place of the existing SCSI-2 interface for ease of integration.
Wicks & Wilson CS350 Aperture Card Scanner and Canine Kennel!
After winning a contract to scan some 230,000 aperture cards, Scanning & Data Solutions
(SDS) were pleased to receive their new Wicks and Wilson CS350 Aperture Card Scanner
from Genus-The Microfilm Shop two weeks ahead of schedule, so that they could get
scanning straight away!
Michael Bailey, SDS Managing Director says "We were worried about the tight schedule
and fast turnaround times for this job, but with an early delivery from Genus-The
Microfilm Shop and a scanner that can create such superb images from a variety of card
qualities we are ahead of schedule. This latest scanner from Wicks and Wilson is a true
batch scanner with plenty of useful features to aid the varying requirements of scanning
bureaus, definitely a worthwhile investment”.
Cards are batch scanned on the CS350 and automatically named using hollerith data extracted from the cards. Each file is then automatically processed using Techsoft's PixEdit Post Processor, for which SDS is the UK distributor. PixEdit simply polls a folder for completed scans from the CS350, deskews, crops and rotates, then saves each scan in a predefined folder, with a choice of some 150 file formats. "PixEdit has significantly improved our production throughput and given us additional service offerings such as creating searchable PDF files, and converting scanned drawings to a vector DXF format as well as post processing every scan we create, an ideal partner for the CS350"
Since delivery in December the Wicks and Wilson CS350 has been running some 14 hours per
day, and looks to be busy for many more months. Michael Bailey concludes "2005 seems to be
the year of the aperture card - we will also be releasing a book
shortly, entitled "101 things to
do with a CS350 crate" after the crate proved to be an excellent kennel for Michaels' Dachshund, Sam.

The Green Sheet acquires www.ggbaker.com
The Green Sheet magazine has recently announced that it has taken over the popular GG Baker web site at www.ggbaker.com.
The Green Sheet is the only magazine dedicated to the microfilm industry and, over the last
few years it has expanded the editorial content to cover all aspects of document management, records management, paper scanning, web hosting, software and box storage. As well as announcing the acquisition of www.ggbaker.com, The Green Sheet also announced a new look format.
The GG Baker web site is a very popular and extensive FREE web site directory that is an ideal and unlimited information source for those involved in the design, planning, implementation and maintenance of document management projects. It has full listings of all of the bureaus, software providers, consultants, hardware and consumable items that a project manager may well need.
Now that the magazine and the web site have been combined it will provide an unrivalled document management information system – with the magazine acting as a permanent reference and the web site giving all of the latest up-to-date product and supplier information. Gerald Baker will continue his editorial duties, thus ensuring the professionalism and accuracy of the site, whilst the marketing and hosting of the site will be taken over by The Green Sheet.
Please take a look at www.green-sheet.net for more information.
Doorway opens for Graphic Press
Graphic Press has recently gained work from Nuneaton & Bedworth Doorway, a local charity who provide help and support to 16 -24 year olds in North Warwickshire. Graphic Press has designed and produced 2000 of their local council A-Z books of information for young people as well as 750 full colour folders.
As a registered charity, Doorway has a very tight budget to adhere to. Doorway therefore chose Graphic Press to design and produce their literature, booklets and promotional material due to Graphic Press’s extremely competitive rates.
Carol Gallagher, Project Co-ordinator said "We have always been very impressed by the quality of the work undertaken by Graphic Press, especially given our financial constraints, They have got used to us bartering the price, to see that we can get as much printing as possible out of the limited budget we have. Feedback from people who have seen the work that Graphic Press have undertaken for us, has always been very positive and their work is a credit to them".
Nuneaton & Bedworth Doorway was set up in 1998 to offer housing and benefit advice to single, homeless young people in Nuneaton, Bedworth and North Warwickshire. Doorway relies on private landlords to enable young people to access safe, affordable accommodation. Once in accommodation, all young people receive support from Doorway to sustain their tenancies and improve their life skills.
